Furniture Power Outlets And USB Ports: A Buyer's Guide
How to choose an outlet or USB port for a power recliner, sofa or sectional.
Outlets and USB ports built into furniture make it easy to charge devices from your seat. When one breaks or you want to add one, a few checks will help you buy the right part.
Replacing a broken one
Note the model number and take a photo of the old unit from the front and back. Measure the cutout, and photograph how it connects. Unplug the furniture first.
What to compare
- The size and shape of the cutout.
- Which ports it has, such as USB or a standard outlet.
- How it gets power and which plug it uses.
USB on a hand control
Some hand controls have a USB port built in. If that port has failed, you may need a new hand control rather than an outlet.
Stay safe
Do not overload a furniture outlet, and stop using any outlet that is damaged, loose or hot. Never work on wiring that is connected to wall power.
