Recliner Mechanism Problems Explained
How to spot a bent, stuck or worn mechanism, and when the problem is not the motor.
The mechanism is the metal frame that lets your chair recline. The motor pushes it, but the mechanism does the moving. A motor can be fine while the mechanism is not.
Signs of mechanism trouble
- The chair leans or sits unevenly.
- One side moves before the other.
- There is a loud creak, or the motor strains and hums.
- The footrest sags or will not close fully.
How to check
Unplug the chair, then ask someone to help you tip it safely. Look for bent arms, missing bolts, cracked welds or objects caught in the frame.
Stay safe
Mechanisms have pinch points. Keep hands, children and pets clear, and never reach in while the chair is plugged in.
Replacing a mechanism
Mechanisms are often specific to a chair and a side. Photograph yours and note any numbers stamped on it. Then browse our mechanisms or ask a parts specialist to help you match it.
