Power Recliner Stopped Working? What To Check First
Before you order a new motor, work through these quick checks. Often the fix is simpler than it looks.
A power recliner that suddenly stops is frustrating, but the cause is not always the motor. Work through these checks in order. Unplug the chair before you touch any cables or parts.
1. Check the power
Test the wall outlet with another device. Then look at the power supply, the transformer brick on the cable. Many have a small light that shows when they are receiving power. If the light is off and the outlet works, the power supply is a likely suspect.
2. Check every plug
Reach under the chair and look at each cable and connection between the power supply, hand control and motor. Plugs can work loose when a chair is moved or cleaned. Reseat each one firmly.
3. Notice what the chair does
- Nothing moves at all: start with the outlet, power supply and cables.
- Moves in only one direction: suspect the hand control first, then the actuator.
- Hums or grinds but will not move: this often points to the actuator or a jammed mechanism.
When to stop
If you notice smoke, a burning smell, sparks or a swollen battery, stop using the chair and leave it unplugged. Do not open a sealed power supply.
