How To Choose And Replace A Recliner Actuator
A simple guide to matching a recliner motor and swapping it out safely.
The actuator is the motor-driven arm that moves your recliner. If it hums, grinds or no longer moves the chair, and the power and hand control check out, it may need replacing.
1. Match the part
Unplug the chair and find the model number on the actuator label, then look for it in our motors and actuators. If the label is missing, measure the distance between the mounting points. This helps a parts specialist find a compatible model.
2. Note how it connects
Before removing anything, take a photo of the plugs and mounting points. Many actuators use 2-pin and 5-pin plugs, but check yours, since the setup varies by chair.
3. Swap it out
- Keep the chair unplugged the whole time.
- Support the chair and mechanism so nothing can drop or close on your hands. Ask someone to help if it is heavy.
- Remove the old actuator from its mounting points and disconnect the plugs.
- Fit the new actuator, then reconnect the plugs as shown in your photo.
4. Test it
Plug the chair back in and run it gently in both directions. Keep hands and pets clear of the mechanism. If anything binds or sounds wrong, unplug it and contact a parts specialist.
